Dental Implants
If you’ve ever lost a tooth, you know how hard it can be to live with a big gap in your smile. You may feel embarrassed about smiling, and you may also find it a problem when chewing and speaking.
Fortunately, we have seen some amazing advances in dental technology in the last few years. These changes have brought us dental implants, a very effective way to replace missing teeth. When we use dental implants at Hobby Dental, we’re not just fixing the appearance of your smile. Unlike a bridge or dentures, implants are a solution that acts just like a natural tooth.
Replacing Teeth With Dental Implants
Dental implants can be used to replace one or several missing teeth. They are so effective that they have become the preferred tooth replacement for many of our patients.
Are you ready to get started? First, we will do a thorough exam to make sure that you are a good candidate for a dental implant. Dental implants are very effective, but they will not work for everyone. If we find that implants are not right for you, we’ll be happy to talk about our other options for replacing teeth.
If you decide to go ahead with dental implants, we’ll refer you to a highly trained implant specialist who begins by placing the implant in your jaw. Once we know that the implant has healed completely, Dr. Missonne will create a beautiful, custom-made dental restoration. This is usually a crown, but we can also use implants to support dentures and bridges.
Missing Teeth Harm Your Oral Health
Most people don’t realize it, but our teeth are always moving very slightly. If a tooth is missing, the rest of your teeth will gradually move into the empty space. This leads to several problems because it changes your dental alignment, causes teeth to become crowded, and makes it difficult to clean your teeth properly.
Some of the other problems that can occur are:
- Breakage and cracking of teeth
- Gum disease and bone loss in the jaw
- Teeth grinding
- TMJ (a condition that causes pain and other symptoms in the jaw joint)
- Premature wear
How Dental Implants Help
Since dental implants are attached to your jaw and act like a natural tooth, they’re referred to as a permanent tooth replacement. The implant is actually a small post that creates a replacement root once it’s placed in your jaw and allowed to heal.
This is the big difference between dental implants and dentures or bridges. The post in your jaw does the job of a natural root and holds a space so that surrounding teeth don’t move out of position.
