Root Canals Save Teeth
Root canals are necessary to keep your teeth strong and healthy. Inside each tooth is a space that can get infected. In most cases, we need to do a root canal because of an infection that’s caused by a cavity or gum disease. If this happens, we need to remove the infected tissue and completely cleanse the tooth to prevent any further damage.
The first sign that you have an infection is usually a toothache. If we don’t treat the infection, it can spread and the pain will continue, and you may lose the tooth. But the only way we can tell for sure that you need a root canal is with a thorough exam by Dr. Missonne. If you notice any of the following symptoms, root canal treatment may be necessary:
- A toothache that keeps getting worse
- A bump or pimple on your gum
- Pain when you chew or bite down
- Sensitivity when you touch or press on the tooth
What Happens During a Root Canal?
We want you to know that you can feel confident about root canal treatment with Dr. Missonne. He’s performed lots of root canals and knows just what it takes to make treatment as easy as having a tooth filled.
First, we numb the area so that you won’t feel anything. Then, we gently remove the infected material inside your tooth. After the infection has been cleared away, we carefully clean the tooth.
Sometimes it may be necessary to give you medicine to make sure that the infection is completely gone. Finally, we seal and fill the tooth. We may also recommend a dental crown after a root canal to protect your tooth.
What to Expect After Treatment
Before you leave us, we’ll give you instructions and explain how to care for your tooth after treatment. It’s common to feel a bit of tenderness in the area after you get home, but this is usually very minor and nothing to be worried about.
