Night Guards and Athletic Mouth Guards
Do you notice that you grind or clench your teeth? It’s common – everyone tends to grind their teeth when feeling stressed or anxious. For some people, though, teeth grinding is a constant problem that can lead to head and neck pain and wearing of their teeth.
Dr. Missonne works with many patients to treat these painful symptoms and eliminate teeth grinding that can damage teeth. We use an FDA-approved dental appliance that actually helps reduce chronic teeth grinding and its symptoms. This device is called an occlusal splint, and it provides quick relief from the painful and damaging symptoms of teeth grinding.
Teeth Grinding Damages Teeth
Teeth grinding can be the result of tension or a problem with your jaw joint. In many cases, grinding and clenching occur because of a misaligned dental bite.
If your bite isn’t aligned properly, your back teeth don’t come together evenly when you chew. When this happens, your jaw has to move out of its normal position to bring the rest of your teeth together. This movement causes you to grind or clench your teeth on that side of your mouth, often leading to pain in the head and neck.
Another problem is all the wear this creates on your teeth. Grinding constantly can weaken your teeth and lead to chipped, broken, or cracked teeth.
Night Guards Prevent Grinding
If Dr. Missonne finds that you’re grinding your teeth, he will recommend a custom night guard, or splint. This is a non-surgical device that will reduce teeth grinding and protect your teeth from wear and tear.
The splint is custom-made to fit perfectly over your front teeth and gently repositions your jaw as it moves from front to back and side to side. It takes stress off the jaw joint, and relieves pain by helping the jaw to relax into a more natural position while you sleep.
Custom Athletic Mouth Guards
If you or your child is active in sports like baseball, basketball, or soccer, you really should consider protecting your teeth with a custom athletic mouth guard. At Hobby Dental, we make athletic mouth guards using impressions of your teeth so you can be sure that they’ll fit perfectly. This gives much better protection than a one-size-fits-all mouth guard you buy at the store.
